A medical startup specializing in portable ultrasound devices approached Witekio to enhance their product with cutting-edge AI technology. Their goal was to leverage AI to enable real-time diagnostics and improve overall system performance.

The Challenge

The startup’s primary challenge was to build a device that leverages AI for reliability and assisting diagnostics. They had already developed a functional prototype but needed Witekio’s expertise in integrating AI on both microcontroller (MCU) and microprocessor (MPU) platforms to create a production-ready, scalable solution.

They aimed to integrate AI for video processing and diagnostics on an i.MX 8 platform, while also adding anomaly detection on a microcontroller to monitor system health. However, their internal team lacked the experience to bring the system to industry standards. They needed a partner to help them:

Consultation and System Analysis

Witekio began by conducting a thorough review of the startup's existing codebase and system architecture. The goal was to assess the foundation and ensure the system could handle the required AI workloads. This involved:

Optimizing the Existing Platform

With a solid understanding of the system's limitations, Witekio set out to update the operating environments:

  • MCU Environment: The team integrated real-time operating systems (RTOS) to ensure low-latency processing for anomaly detection.
  • MPU Environment: Witekio transitioned the existing Linux system to a Yocto-based build for improved security, customization, and performance. This provided a flexible base for running AI models on the i.MX 8 processor.

AI Integration

Witekio's expertise in AI was critical to the project's success. The solution involved two key components:

  • AI on the MCU: For hardware anomaly detection, Witekio integrated a simple yet powerful AI model on the microcontroller. This model monitored various sensors (current, temperature, etc.) to detect abnormalities, helping predict potential hardware failures and ensuring the device’s longevity.
  • AI on the MPU: Using the industry-standard framework TensorFlow Lite, Witekio enabled real-time video processing on the i.MX 8 processor. This allowed the ultrasound device to run AI models locally, assisting in medical diagnostics by processing images directly on the device. The AI model was designed to be updated and iterated upon, ensuring continuous improvement and flexibility in future diagnostics.

The results

The startup successfully transformed their prototype into a proof-of-concept (POC) ultrasound device, equipped with real-time AI capabilities. Witekio’s contributions resulted in:
  • AI Driven diagnostics: the device can now process ultrasound images in real-time, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and positioning the company ahead of competitors
  • Enhanced system reliability: the integration of anomaly detection on the MCU provides predictive maintenance capabilities, ensuring long term stability and reducing the likelihood of device failure
  • Scalable architecture : the system's architecture was optimized for future iterations, allowing the startup to expand and improve its product without major overhauls
