The Challenge

Somfy, a French multinational specializing in automated blinds and systems, wanted to launch a new offering for commercial buildings. To do this they needed to modernize and revamp their existing solution. The main challenges included:

  • Legacy System Limitations: The existing hardware couldn’t support the latest Linux updates, necessitating a complete overhaul.
  • Complex User Base: The new solution needed to cater to a diverse group of users, including electricians, blind installers, building owners, facility managers, and end users.
  • Protocol Integration: Incorporating the IO protocol into a scalable solution for small and mid commercial buildings posed significant technical challenges.
  • Global Market Differences: The solution had to be adaptable to various construction practices and user needs across different countries.
  • Tight Deadlines: Coordinating front-end and back-end development under a strict timeline required meticulous planning and collaboration.

Comprehensive UX/UI Consulting:

To ensure that the new application would be user-friendly for the vast range of professions and cultures that would need to use it, Witekio:

  • Conducted extensive user interviews with different personas (e.g., blind installers, facility managers) to understand their unique requirements and challenges.
  • Developed detailed user journey maps and personas to guide the design process.
  • Created wireframes and prototypes, followed by rigorous user testing to refine the interface.

Web Application Development:

Once consulting and UX was outlined, our team of application experts got to work building:

  • A web application that could seamlessly integrate with Somfy's new and existing hardware.
  • A user-friendly interface that simplifies complex tasks, such as controlling multiple blinds across large buildings.
  • Developed a 3D building mockup tool to help users visualize and manage their blinds effectively.

Parallel Development and Collaboration:

Somfy knew their current wired systems were becoming obsolete, and they needed to upgrade to a wireless technology platform, so to achieve this, they first acquired Overkiz, a company with expertise in radio communication protocols, including their proprietary IO protocol.

  • Worked closely with Somfy’s internal development team to synchronize the front-end and back-end development efforts.
  • Ensured compatibility with multiple communication protocols, including IO.
  • Implemented a modular design approach to allow for flexible and scalable integration with various systems.
  • Provided continuous feedback loops and iterations based on user testing and real-world pilot deployments.

Real-world Testing and Iteration:

To ensure the system would work seamlessly in the real world, Witekio:

  • Conducted multiple pilot tests in different types of buildings to gather real-world data.
  • Used feedback from these tests to iterate and improve the product, addressing issues such as installation errors and communication gaps.

The results

  • Successful delivery : despite the tight deadline, the project was delivered on time, meeting all technical and usability requirements
  • User adoption: the new system received positive feedback from users, highlighting the improved user experience and functionality
  • Sustainability goals: the new blinds system contributed to energy efficiency goals, helping buildings reduce their energy consumption
  • Successful roll-out: Witekio deployed the application to production with real users, both internally at Somfy and externally
  • Market impact: Somfy's new solution was well-received at professional events, with clients expressing high interest and confidence in the product
  • Knowledge transfer: Somfy's team was fully trained to take over the product, ensuring long-term sustainability and independence.
